Exchange Server Defrag Instructions

Defrag Exchange Server

  1. Stop the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
  2. Backup  the exchange server database from your exchange directory. For example, “D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group” to an external drive
  3. open command prompt and navigate to D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Bin directory.
  4. execute Eseutil /d (location of the database)
  5. Restart Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.

Note: the location of the Microsoft Exchange Server directory maybe different depending on your installation path.

If you don’t have enough hard drive space (110% of the database size is needed)  on your exchange server, you can use an external hard drive to complete the defrag. Enter the following command in this case.

eseutil /d E:\Exchsrvr\Databases\priv1.edb /tx:\tempriv.edb

Note: x stands for the drive letter of an external storage.  Once the defrag is completed successfully, it will automatically move the defraged database to Exchange server automatically.
