How to set size limits for messages in Exchange Server 2007

In my previous article, I wrote about size limits for messages in Exchange server 2003. Let’s look at Exchange Server 2007 size limitation now. Its very easy to retrieve the size limitation in Exchange Server 2007  using Exchange Management Shell CMDlets. You can use the following CMDlet to see what the current size limitation is is from an Organization level is. This was called Global Setting in Exchange server 2003.

get-transportconfig

You can change the maximum recieve size by typing in the following CMDlet.

Set-Transportconfig –maxreceivesize 20MB

You can easily change the maximum send size by entering the following CMDlet as well.

Set-Transportconfig –maxsendsize 20MB

If you want to change both settings simultaniously, enter the following CMDlet. The MB size can be anything you prefer. I entered 20MB for illustrative purposes only.

Set-TransportConfig -MaxReceiveSize 20MB -MaxSendSize 20MB

As in Exchange server 2003, you can change the connector settings for the size limitation in Exchange server 2007 as well. The following CMDlet will display the existing settings currently.

Get-receiveconnector | List

You can set the recieve connector size limit by entering the following CMDlet.

Set-ReceiveConnector “name of the connector” -MaxMessageSize 20Mb

You can also set the send connector size limit by the following the CMDlet.

Set-SendConnector “name of the connector” -MaxMessageSize 20Mb

As in the Exchange Server 2003, you can set the user mailbox size limit by the following CMDlet in Exchange Server 2007. If you override the global settings for the user, please be aware that this setting will work only internally. It doesn’t apply to emails send to or recieved from the outside world.

Set-Mailbox “Joe Smith” -MaxSendSize 20Mb -MaxReceiveSize 20Mb

With Exchange Server 2007 SP1, some of these CMDlets can be configured using Exchange Management Console. In the future, I will discuss doing this from a console. If you get errors such as #550 5.2.3 RESOLVER.RST.RecipSizeLimit; message too large for this recipient ##, #550 5.2.3 RESOLVER.RST.SendSizeLimit; message too large for this sender ##, it is a message size restriction issue.
