How to stop and start SMTP services

If you are an exchange 2003 or prior version administrator, you will run in to times when you have to stop and start SMTP services. One of the critical part of Exchange troubleshooting is restarting SMTP services.

There are 2 ways of restarting services.

1. Graphical

a. Click on Start, then Run

b. Type in the word “services.msc”

c. Scroll down and look for “Simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP)”

d. Right click on SMTP and restart, or stop or start as you wish.

2. Command line

a. Open up a command prompt

b. Type “net stop smtpsvc” or “net start smtpsvc” as you wish
